Essential oil extraction methods
Typically, essential oil extraction methods include:
Steam Distillation
The most common method where steam is passed through plant material to vaporize the volatile compounds, which are then condensed back into liquid form
Cold Pressing
Used primarily for citrus peels where the fruit skins are mechanically pressed to extract the oils.
Solvent Extraction
Involving the use of solvents that dissolve plant components, which are then evaporated to leave behind the essential oils.
CO2 Extraction
A newer method that uses pressurized carbon dioxide to pull the desired phytochemicals from the plant. When the pressure is released, CO2 evaporates, leaving behind the extract.
Cryo-distillation
The method involving freezing herbs and slowly warming them could be a specialized form of what’s sometimes referred to as Cryo-distillation or a similar cryogenic process. These techniques are less common and typically used in laboratory settings or very specialized industrial applications. They are noted for their ability to preserve heat-sensitive compounds that might otherwise degrade during traditional distillation processes.
